Water level making fishing a little difficult

Ned here:

The water level has been bouncing up and down all month; in most cases, fishing becomes difficult when this happens. The fish just don’t seem to get “settled in.” Mornings have typically seen levels around 900cfs in Hale Eddy and by late afternoons they drop to 600cfs.

Sulphurs have really been slowing down, but don’t count them out yet. Some anglers are reporting sulphur hatches from noon-2 p.m. and then again from 5 p.m. to dark. The sulphur action seems to be better on warm days.

Be careful wading and only wade in areas of the river you know or are with someone who does. 1000cfs can be tricky. Be careful turning around.

What our guests are seeing:

Things are starting to change. Sulphur hatches are really slowing down. Sizes are 18 and 20, colors are very pale yellow, orangey yellow and yellow, all having wings that appear strong cream (not white) when floating. Have emergers and spinners in your box. Very small BWO sizes 20-30 in the late afternoon and cloudy days.

BWO-Size 18-20 dark wings

BWO-Size 22-26 medium gray wings. Try these when you can’t see what the fish are rising to.

Also have a few of these in your box:

ISO-Size 12

Tan Caddis-Sizes 16 and 18

Beetles-Sizes 14-16

Big Black Ants-Sizes 16-18

Summer is ending, but the fishing continues on the West Branch of the Delaware. I’m Ned Murphy, licensed guide and some days I’m behind the counter at the Dream Catcher Fly Shop. Stop by and see us. Dream Catcher has 1.2 miles of private fishing shoreline and 9 cabins for rent.
